Free trees available in Miami: Here’s what to do

Who wants a free tree?

Just head to the site of the Community Canopy program, which is designed to help people plant trees on their property for maximum energy savings as part of Arbor Day Foundation efforts.

The program partners with cities, states, energy companies, corporations and nonprofit organizations to distribute trees throughout the country. In parts of Miami, it is made possible through Cleveland Clinic.

Trees around homes will not only help reduce the amount of energy your home requires, but they also add to your property value, reduce your carbon footprint, improve the air quality, and more effectively catch stormwater runoff.

According to the Arbor Day Foundation: “Planting the right tree in the right place is key to maximizing the energy-saving benefits that trees provide. When planted properly, a single tree can save a homeowner up to 20% on energy costs.”

GET STARTED

To get started, click here and type in your address. This will tell you if you’re eligible based on location, your area’s partner group, and which trees are available to you.

We put in several addresses, including in the Kendall area, and several tree are available during spring 2021: the 1-gallon potted Bald Cypress, Dahoon Holly, Live Oak and Muskogee Crape Myrtle.

This is the selection we’re seeing by address, although some trees might appear as “sold out” by the time you see this, so you’ll need to check it out for yourself! Also, if you don’t see anything listed for your area now, be sure to try again later, as this is updated.

THE PROCESS

The process is pretty interesting. After you enter your address, the website will bring up a satellite view of your property, and you’ll drag the corners of a rectangle around to show the dimensions of your house.

Then you’ll choose a species of tree. You’ll drag the tree to different places in your yard and the website will estimate how much energy savings the tree will bring you.

Then you finalize the selection.

A video on the website demonstrates how to complete each step.
