Free food boxes: Adopt-a-Box keeps growing

Free food boxes: Adopt-a-Box keeps growing

Whether you need help getting groceries, or you can afford to help others, this one’s for you. A new program, titled Adopt-a-Box, aims to assist both farmers and families by getting local produce to those who need it most.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS:

Money donated through a GoFundMe page will be used to support local farms by purchasing their fruits and vegetables. Then, those goods are packaged into boxes to be distributed to families every Saturday free of charge, for as long as funding is available. The boxes are handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.

Every $25 raised means one family sized, 20-pound box of produce. During the first distribution on April 18, 800 boxes were given away at the Homestead Sports Complex, according to organizers.

As of May 12, the fund has raised almost $97,000.

That has allowed the operation to expand. According to the GoFundMe page, volunteers recently distributed 1,640 boxes of produce, totaling more than 16 tons of Florida-grown fruits and vegetables. They even stretched into Broward County, with a sponsored load of 800 boxes in Dania Beach.

  • You must enter in a vehicle; no walk-ins allowed.
  • Upon arrival, you will be directed to dropoff points.
  • Remain in your vehicle and open the trunk so a volunteer can place a box inside.
  • You will then be directed to the exit.

Adopt-a-Box is a joint effort involving Redland Ahead and Unity Groves.
