NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) of Miami-Dade County is hosting its Fourth Annual Reel Minds Miami Mental Health Film Festival at the University of Miami’s Donna E. Shalala Student Center Grand Ballroom on Sunday, May 19, 2019. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m., complimentary snacks and soft drinks will be served until 3 p.m. and the films will run from 3-5 p.m.
They’ll be screening six short films, each on a different topic. Cuban-born and Miami-raised actor and filmmaker Roberto Sanchez, will introduce his emotionally personal film based on his family’s true story of loving a mom with a mental health condition.
Following him will be a Miami-Dade College student who will tell her inspirational story about the bullying anddepression she underwent due to a childhood disability, her strength to get past it and the top colleges to which she’s been accepted.
Volunteers and signs will be stationed along the walkway to and from the parking garage to the Grand Ballroom. There will also be a sign language interpreter.
