Sunday, April 22, 3 p.m.: Messiaen Quartet: Music for Eternity
Four New York-based master musicians – pianist Daniel Epstein, violinist Sheng-Ching Hsu, clarinetist Eric Umble, and cellist Ben Larsen – will perform Messiaen’s masterpiece Quartet for the End of Time. Captured at Verdun in 1940, Messiaen transcended his Stalag prison camp’s misery to express his exalted vision of music as a spiritual connection to creation and the creator. First performed in prison, the quartet, named after the Angel’s call to the Apocalypse in Revelation, is one of the most significant chamber compositions of the 20th century. The quartet also will performTasveer, by award-winning Indian-American composer Reena Esmail.
