Florida sales tax holiday for energy, water savings

water-ripplesFlorida is offering a sales tax holiday for energy-saving appliances and water-saving products Sept. 19-21. That means that, if you buy certain items, there will be no Florida sales tax on those items.

There are some limits. No local or state sales taxes will be collected on the first $1,500 of the sales price of a new qualifying Energy Star or WaterSense product, but you can get the exemption on only one of the same product with a sales price of $500 or more. So you can’t buy two tax-free refrigerators, but you can get a refrigerator and a dishwasher.

There is no limit on the number of each item valued at less than $500, so you can buy two toilets or three new faucets if you want.

Energy Star products must have the Energy Star sticker. The products eligible for Florida tax-free days are:

  • Air purifier
  • Ceiling fan
  • Clothes washer
  • Dehumidifier
  • Dishwasher
  • Freezer
  • Light bulbs (packages)
  • Refrigerator
  • Room air conditioner
  • Swimming pool pump
  • Water heater

Water-saving products must have the WaterSense label. Qualifying products are:

  • Bathroom sink faucet
  • Faucet accessory
  • High-efficiency toilet or urinal
  • Showerhead
  • Weather or sensor-based irrigation controller

Miami-Dade residents who install certain WaterSense toilets are eligible for a $50 rebate. County residents can also exchange old shower heads for new water-saving shower heads.
