The rich culture, tradition and often untold history of the Haitian people is the central focus of Zakafest, a free family event that celebrates the Caribbean nation’s music, art and dance. The event is on Saturday, May 5, from 1 to 11 p.m. at the Little Haiti Cultural Center, 212-260 NE 59 Terr., Miami.
From 1 to 5 p.m., there will be a drum circle and workshops. The event also will include art exhibitions and food presentations.
Performances start at 5 p.m. Among the top performers will be:
- John Steve Brunache, a Haitian musician who found prominence through the ’80s and ’90s. His music took on the problems of the days with such music as “La Relev”, “Chimen Limye”, and “timoun yo”.
- Georges Vilson
- Skotch Bonnett, has been heating up the South Florida scene and capturing the stage with their flavorful blend of Reggae, Soca, R&B, Top 40’s and Rock & Roll.
- Ameyal Mexican Cultural OrganizationWe present a variety of shows with live music, dancers, life sized puppets, elaborate traditional costumes, storytelling, and theater.
