Earth Day isn’t over with these Miami activities

April 22 was Earth Day. However, you can enjoy many activities and join events throughout the month.

In April, Miami has been spreading environmental awareness and highlighting ways to preserve Mother Earth. From beach clean-ups to Earth-inspired documentaries, Miamians can embrace their sustainable spirit in many different ways.

Though everything feels eerie due to the global pandemic, one can see the silver lining through this dark time. Currently, people are enjoying outdoor activities more and reaping the benefits of sustainable living. And now that patio season is approaching, people are being more conscious about climate change.

Here’s a roundup of events and activities to help you honor Earth Day:

Coral Gables Cinema is featuring a special movie screening of “Aquarela,” with an introduction by Irela Bague, chief bay officer for Miami-Dade County. The film will be shown on Sunday, April 25 at 2 p.m. You can purchase your ticket here. Reserved seating: $7-$11.75. Address: 260 Aragon Ave. For more information, call 786-472-2249.

Palmetto Bay is bringing the community together with an Earth Day clean-up through Saturday, April 24. Community service hours will be provided for participating, although anyone can participate, whether they wish to earn community service hours or not. A Google form should be completed for each day you decide to pick up trash. For more information and to register for the clean-up, click here.

Thalatta Estate Park in Palmetto Bay is featuring an outdoor film and art exhibit on Friday, April 23 at 6:30 p.m. For only $5, guests can watch the documentary film, “Everglades Rising,” by the water. Visitors are welcome to bring along chairs, blankets and a cooler. The screening beings at 8 p.m. Click here to register for the event. Address: 17301 Old Cutler Road.

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden has an event calendar filled with amazing activities for the entire family. From learning how to build a garden from scraps to creating macramé plant hangers, you can find a sense of adventure and relaxation in each event. Prices vary per event. Though the activities are not related to the Earth Day celebration, these events are a great way to promote sustainable living. Address: 10901 Old Cutler Road. Deering Estate is saluting the Earth with full moon yoga on Monday, April 26 at 6:30 p.m. You can enjoy the sunset while welcoming the full moon in this historic venue, for $20 per person. To register for the event, click here. Tickets might be sold out, but you can check for other upcoming yoga events. Address: 16701 SW 72nd Ave., Miami. 

 

Free People store in Coconut Grove is offering in-person yoga classes every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. The classes are free and take place on the Cocowalk lawn area. Yoga is a great practice that raises awareness of global sustainability and promotes green change. You can schedule an upcoming class here. Address: 3015 Grand Ave., No. 107, Coconut Grove. The official Earth Day website, EarthDay.org, has historical information, at-home activities, quizzes, volunteer opportunities, and more. 

GableStage in Coral Gables is having an Earth Day Plant Giveaway from 8 to 11 a.m. Thursday, April 22. Visitors are asked to remain in their vehicles and wear a facial covering. Dezerland Park and the City of North Miami are showing a free drive-in movie at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 22. What’s playing? “The Lorax,” the 2012 computer-animated film that is based on a Dr. Seuss book and touches on environmental themes. This event will include food trucks COVID-19 safety protocols. Fruit and Spice Park in Homestead is giving volunteers the opportunity to help maintain the 37-acre botanical garden on Earth Day. Volunteers will be asked to remove vines and weeds and do light gardening. The event will take place on April 22 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information, click here. Address: 24801 SW 187th Ave.

The Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science is hosting a virtual live event on Thursday, April 22 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. for viewers to explore the topic of climate change. The free, one-hour event, titled “Virtual LIVE@Frost Science: Earth Day” and presented by FPL SolarNow, will feature speakers, museum experts and scientists discussing relevant topics related to the conservation of America’s Everglades. Miami Beach Botanical Garden is hosting a friendly Earth Day celebration with a vinyasa and meditation class. The event will take place on April 22 at 5:30 p.m., and guests will have the chance to participate in a plant giveaway. Also, you can enjoy an environmental film, “The Biggest Little Farm” at 7:30 p.m. You can register for the event here; it costs $15 to reserve your spot. Address: 2000 Convention Center Drive.

South Florida PBS presents “Greta Thunberg: A Year to Change the World,” on April 22nd at 8 p.m. The documentary follows Greta Thunberg around the world as she meets with leading climate scientists and witnesses first-hand the consequences of climate change.
